It's Worth The Journey
The Jackson Street Programme
The Jackson Street Programme (JSP) is a main street programme set up originally in 1991 by business owners and became an incorporated society in 1992. A main street programme was required as in the 1980s Petone had to cope with the shrinking industrial base, the loss of local political autonomy and the drift of retail and servicing businesses to the nearby mall in Lower Hutt and associated developments.
The JSP's purpose at the time was to encourage the econimic revitalisation and promotion of Jackson Street.
Moving forward to today: the JSP's main source of funds is a targeted rate levied by the Hutt City Council on commercial ratepayers on Jackson Street. Every three years these businesses are polled to see whether they still support the rate. Funds also come from charitable donations and subscriptions paid by supporters and associate members. We are a non-profit organisation whose first initiative is solely for Jackson Street Petone.
We have three part-time staff that run and contribute to making Petone thrive from its office in the Historic Police Station - the Co-ordinator, Administrator (& heritage specialist) and Marketing & Social Media Manager
The JSP Board is made up of business owners and building owners and is elected at an annual general meeting held each spring.
Our Mission
To promote, preserve and enhance Jackson Street as a successful heritage, retail and commercial area.
Our Vision
Jackson Street is a destination for shopping, dining, professional services, commercial services, socialising, events and heritage.
The JSP continues to grow the profile of Petone (with focus on businesses in Jackson Street), together with opportunties for Associate Members and partnerships from our community. We are also known to be the flagship for small towns by our innovating thinking.
We take our thinking outside of the box and into the realm of
possibilities to create tourism for the area, a new way to shop for our
businesses, educating our community of their local history in innovating ways,
and we were voted one of the top 5 destinations in New Zealand to visit in
2019.
